Green Ribbon Schools Application
The Pennsylvania Department of Education's Pathways to Green Schools Program and the federal Green Ribbon Schools program will continue to accept Green Ribbon Schools applications until 6 PM on December 20, 2012.
The Green Ribbon Schools awards were created by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to recognize schools that have achieved or made considerable progress toward energy efficient buildings, healthy students and school environment, and the environmental literacy of all graduates. This year, there are awards for both individual school buildings, and for school districts. All public and private schools that have a K-12 configuration are eligible to apply for the Green Ribbon School building award. This includes charter schools, career and technical centers, and those educational schools operated by intermediate units. School districts with multiple buildings can apply for the District Sustainability Award. For more information on Green Ribbon Schools, please visit www2.ed.gov/programs/green-ribbon-schools.
As part of this effort to promote a comprehensive approach to creating green and sustainable schools, the Pennsylvania Department of Education launched the Pathways to Green Schools initiative. The Pathways website includes information from various state agencies about the resources, grants and programs available to assist schools to become more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly places of learning. It also includes a number of "best practice case studies" from schools across the Commonwealth.
